About Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin is an American multinational Donuts/coffee company and quick-serve restaurant chain. Dunkin’ was founded by  William Rosenberg in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950.

The company was acquired by Baskin-Robbins’ in 1990. Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins are subsidiaries of Dunkin’ Brands, the headquarters of which are located in Canton, Massachusetts since 2004.

The company was rebranded as Dunkin’ in January 2021.

History of Dunkin’ Donuts

William Rosenberg started Open Kettle in 1948, a restaurant that sells donuts and coffee in Quincy, Massachusetts. But in 1950, the name was changed to Dunkin’ Donuts. After the restaurant’s success, Rosenberg sold Dunkin’ Donuts franchises to others in 1955.

At the age of 25, Rosenberg’s son Robert became CEO of the company in 1963 and Dunkin’ Donuts opened its 100th location that year.

At that time, the company was the subsidiary of Universal Food Systems. In the following years, others under businesses under Universal Food Systems were sold or closed and the company was renamed as Dunkin’ Donuts.

The chain was acquired by Buskin-Robbins’ owner Allied Lyons in 1990. The brand grew to 2,500 locations worldwide with $2 billion in annual sales by 1998.

Dunkin’ Donuts expanded in the 1990s by acquiring two rival chains, Mister Donut, and Dawn Donuts.

The headquarters of the company was relocated to Canton in 2004. In December 2005, both Dunkin’ Donuts and Buskin-Robbins’ were sold to a private equity consortium of Bain Capital, Carlyle Group, and Thomas H. Lee Partners.

On July 11, 2018, Dave Hoffman took over from Nigel Travis and became CEO of the company.
