About IHOP

IHOP is the acronym for International House of Pancakes. IHOP is an American multinational pancake house restaurant chain that is specialized in breakfast foods. It is owned by Dine Brands Global, which was formed after IHOP purchased Applebee’s.

IHOP focuses on breakfast foods but it also offers lunch and dinner menu. The company has 1,822 locations worldwide, 159 of which are owned by area licensees and 1663 of which are franchised. Many of its locations are opened 24 hours a day and  7 days a week. While the minimum opening hours are 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

History of IHOP

International House of Pancakes was founded by Jerry Lapin, Al Lapin, and Albert Kallis with the help of Sherwood Rosenberg and William Kaye in 1958. The first restaurant was opened in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, California.

The initial design of IHOP’s building was a steep-roofed A-frame building with a distinctive blue color.

In 1973, the name was shortened to “IHOP” for marketing purposes. They used cartoon kangaroo in their advertisement for the first time and since then full name and acronym had been interchanged.

The breakfast menu was later expanded, especially in the 1980s, to include standard lunch and dinner items.

On July 16, 2007, IHOP Corporation announced a plan to acquire Applebee’s in an all-cash transaction with value of approximately US$2.1 billion. The corporate entity IHOP changed its name to DineEquity on June 2, 2008.
