About Jack In The Box

Jack In The Box is a fast-food restaurant chain founded by Robert O. Peterson in 1951. Its headquarters are situated in San Diego, California where it was originally founded. Jack In The Box is serving more than 2,200 locations.

History of Jack In The Box

Peterson converted the El Cajon Boulevard location into Jack in the Box, a hamburger stand that focused on drive-through service, in 1951. Jack In The Box innovated the drive-through system by providing a two-way intercom system. Intercom provided a much faster way of delivery than the traditional drive-up window. While the first customer is served, the order for second and third customers could be prepared.

Peterson formed Foodmaker, Inc. in 1960 as a holding company for Jack in the Box. In 1968, Peterson sold Foodmaker to Ralston Purina Company.

In the 1970s, Foodmaker led the Jack in the Box chain toward its growth by providing television commercials in the early 1970s which featured child actor Rodney Allen Rippy and began to franchise the locations.

Jack in the Box in 1980s announced that it would no longer compete with McDonald’s target customers. Instead, Foodmaker targeted older and more affluent customers.

Annual sales increased through the 1980s. Ralston Purina tried further to grow the restaurant’s image by renaming it “Monterey Jack’s” in late 1985. The name proved to be a big disaster and the name “Jack in the Box” was restored back in early 1986.

Later in 1985, Ralston Purina decided that Foodmaker was a non-core asset and sold it to management. By 1987 the sales reached $655 million and the chain reached 897 restaurants and Foodmaker became a public trademark company.
