Jimmy John’s History

It all started when Jimmy John Liautaud graduated to last in his class, his father gave him two options either to join the military or start his own business. He chose the latter and started a hot dog stand with Jimmy owing 52% of the business and his father owing 48%. He soon realized that a hot dog stand will cost him more than what he had, so he decided to open a sandwich shop.

The first Jimmy John’s was opened in a garage on January 13, 1983, in Charleston, Illinois. In 1988 Jimmy met Jamie Coulter, who would later become the CEO of Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon. Coulter taught Jimmy how to effectively run multiple units.

As of March 2017, Jimmy John’s has almost 3,000 stores with plans for expansion up to 5,000 and beyond.

In September 2016, Jimmy John’s announced that Roark Capital Group had agreed to acquire majority stakes in the company. Liautaud retained 35% ownership of the company as part of the deal.

On September 25, 2019, it was announced that Inspire Brands was buying Jimmy John’s for an unspecified amount in a deal collectively approved by Liautaud and Board of Directors of Jimmy John’s. At the close of the deal, Liautaud will step down as chairman of the company and will turn the adviser to the brand. The acquisition was completed on October 18.
