Mellow Mushroom History

Mellow Mushroom opened in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1974, two students from Georgia Tech and later joined by the third one from the University of Georgia founded a business that reflected their eccentric philosophies. The third restaurant was opened in Spring Street in Atlanta.

In the 1980s, the first franchise was opened by an employee, followed by the customer-owned franchises and then to friends of employees and customers. Each franchise was locally owned and operated with its own unique feel.

The first location was located outside Atlanta in Athens, Georgia, near the University of Georgia. As of January 2020, the chain has over 200 locations across 20 states.
