Popeyes is an American multinational chain that offers fried chicken fast food. It was founded in 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The headquarters are located in Miami, Florida. Since 2008. Its full brand name is Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc.  It is currently a subsidiary of Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International.

There are 3,102 restaurants as of 2018, in more than 40 states the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 30 countries worldwide.

History of Popeyes

Popeyes was founded in Arabi, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans in St. Bernard Parish. It was first opened on June 12, 1972, as “Chicken on the Run”. The owner,  Al Copeland, wanted to compete with Kentucky Fried Chicken but his restaurant failed after several months.

Copeland opened the restaurant again four days later as Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken. The company was renamed as Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken by 1975. He started franchising the restaurant in 1976 beginning in Louisiana. The chain opened its 500th restaurant in 1985.

By 1990, Copeland Enterprises was in debt of $391 million and in April 1991 the company filed for bankruptcy protection. The court in October 1992 approved the plan of Copeland creditors of creating America’s Favorite Chicken Company, Inc. (AFC) to serve as the parent company of Popeyes and Church’s. On December 29, 2004, AFC sold Church’s to Arcapita retaining Popeyes.

On June 17, 2014, Popeyes announced that it had acquired full control of its seasonings, recipes, and other proprietary food preparation techniques from Diversified Foods & Seasonings.
