History of Panda Express

The Panda Restaurant Group is the parent company of Panda Inn, Panda Express, and founded by Hibachi-San. It was founded by Andrew Cherng, Peggy Cherng and Andrew’s father, Master Chef Ming Tsai Cherng.

In 1973, Andrew went into business with his father and opened their first Panda Inn restaurant in Pasadena, California. Peggy joined Andrew in the business in 1982.

Two years later, the second location was opened in Westside Pavilion in 1985. Since then chain steadily expanded across the United States. In 1997, the company opened its first stand-alone, drive-through restaurant, in Hesperia, California.

The Panda Restaurant Group had annual sales of over $3 billion as of 2017 and has close to 39,000 employees.

In December 2017, they had opened the 2000th location which is located in New York City near Columbia University.
